International Nurses Day: From Engineer to District Nurse
/This International Nurses Day, we are proud to share the story of Catalin Tapu, a dedicated nurse whose commitment to care and infectious positivity have made him a standout member of our healthcare community.
From Romania to the UK: A Journey of Purpose
Originally from Romania, Catalin moved to the UK in 2015 to pursue his nursing career. Interestingly, nursing wasn't his first path - he originally studied geology and chemistry to become an engineer. His transition to healthcare was sparked while delivering goods to a nursing school, where a friend and his wife encouraged him to consider the profession.
Today, Catalin works across various settings, including community district nursing, medical and surgical wards, and nursing homes. His experience is extensive, including past work within the NHS in hospital settings. He describes the essence of his work simply: "It's like serving somebody that needs you.”
A Vital Bridge in Healthcare
Catalin is highly aware of the challenges within the broader healthcare system. He notes that the system can sometimes be slow, particularly regarding wait times and communication. Because of this, he sees himself as a "ladder" or a "bridge" between the patient and their GP. By facilitating quicker communication and taking direct action, he helps ensure his patients receive the timely care they deserve.
Why the Team Nominated Him
Catalin's team was eager to nominate him for his unparalleled reliability and attitude. Known for being "always a pleasure to speak to," he frequently travels between 5 and 45 miles to assist with ASAP cover and pick up extra shifts.
Beyond his technical skills, Catalin is praised for his patience. He takes extra time to explain medications and procedures step-by-step, even for patients with dementia who may not remember the details but feel the comfort of his presence.
A Heart for the Hardest Moments
One of the most profound stories Catalin shared was from the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. When his first COVID patient was nearing the end of her life and unable to reach her family abroad, Catalin gave her his own phone so she could speak with them. He stayed by her side until his shift ended, ensuring she wasn't alone in her final moments.
Nurse by Day, Fragrance Influencer by Night
Outside of his scrubs, Catalin has a vibrant personality and a unique hobby: he is a perfume reviewer and influencer with a collection of over 500 bottles! This passion often follows him to work, where patients frequently comment on how nice he smells, sparking joyful conversations. When he isn't reviewing fragrances or enjoying a coffee (he loves it any way - black, milky, or caramel!), he spends his time hiking in the Peak District or visiting his son in London.
A Personal Commitment to Care
Catalin's drive for excellence is deeply personal. He admits that he sometimes "judges the system" because he has experienced it both as a provider and as a patient himself. This unique perspective motivates him to serve every patient with the same high standard of care he would want for himself.
His message to fellow nurses is one of authenticity: "If you're not enjoying being a nurse, just give up". He believes that patients need a genuine, positive attitude and that nurses must be able to leave the stresses of the day behind to return with a clear mind.
To Catalin and all the nurses who go the extra mile - thank you for your dedication, your compassion, and for being the bridge of care our patients need. As we celebrate Nurses Day, we are reminded that it is people like Catalin who make all the difference. Happy International Nurses Day!
