What is a Band 5 or Band 6 Nurse?

Band 5 nurses can be found all throughout specialist wards, general wards, clinics and private facilities. It is vitally important to understand, that only experience and training can assist a nurse to move up the band system which was laid out by the NHS agenda for change and supported by the UK government.

Below are the respective Bands of nursing staff:

Band and TitleSummary of Experience
Band 2 Healthcare Assistant (HCA) No formal degree, has experience in the industry, has completed training courses to provide Healthcare services to patients at home
Band 3 Healthcare Assistant  No formal nursing degree, more experienced than a Band 2 HCA, but additional qualifications enabling them to administer medication
Band 5 Nurse  Newly qualified nursing staff, that have a minimum of 6 months' work experience in hospitals or clinics, as well as all statutory training and certification in place.
Band 6 Nurse  Experienced nursing staff, which have specialist experience, more than 24 months work experience in hospitals or clinics, as well as all statutory training and certification in place.
Band 7 Nurse  Specialist nursing staff – formally trained and experienced in a variety or one specialty. These could be senior practitioners or management roles

When hiring a Band 5 nurse, it's important to note that the higher the band nursing professional, the more senior the role. To cover a night shift, for instance, in a nursing home, a Band 5 nurse will have received adequate training to be able to cover the night shift independently, so more senior nursing staff is beneficial, but not a necessity.

Ensure that you explain all the positions which you are looking to fill with your booking consultant, and they will make the most appropriate recommendations based on your needs.
